Type 8s are people that fear being weak, vulnerable, and harmed, so they create an image that they are strong, able to prevail, determined and committed to those who are innocent. If they are not doing well, they can be vengeful, excessive, and destructive.
What drives a Type 8 to think, feel, and behave in particular ways?
Core Fear:
Core Desire:
Core Weakness:
Lust/Excess—constantly desiring intensity, control, and power; pushing themselves willfully on life and people in order to get what they desire.
Core Longing (message they long to hear):

Healthy 8s
Type 8s are similar to snow plows. Healthy 8s use their intensity and power to plow a path for those who cannot plow a path for themselves. 8s have no problem being the ones who take the “hits” so that others can move forward in life. They are especially good at plowing a path for those who are at the mercy of injustice. (Think Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement)
8s on Auto-Pilot
When 8s forget that Christ will provide and protect them, they start to think that it is up to them to protect themselves from being harmed, controlled and taken advantage of by others. They start to use their intensity, strength, and confrontational style to ward off those who are trying to harm them. They will challenge and go against others to test them and see if the other person is being truthful or taking advantage of them.
Unhealthy 8s
Their whole focus at this level revolves around protecting themselves from those whom they believe are a threat to them. They do not trust people, and assume everyone has an agenda to hurt or control them. Therefore, they want to beat them to it by controlling and hurting others first. If they have been hurt by someone, they can be very vengeful in making sure the other person gets what they deserve.

The Enneagram (Ennea=9, Gram=Diagram) is simply a map for self-discovery and personal growth. The diagram describes the 9 basic personality types based upon their unique ways of relating to the world.
The Enneagram accurately and clearly describes why you think, feel and behave in particular ways based upon your core fears and core desires.
The power of the Enneagram is in its ability to harness and transform self-defeating behaviors into life-enhancing personal empowerment. The gift of the Enneagram is that through self-discovery, one can create and sustain meaningful and lasting relationships with others, God and themselves.
